The first opportunity in several weeks for some useful rain is still on track to spread across New Zealand during Sunday and Monday.
Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented; “In many places, there could be more than one spell of rain and whilst it won’t provide all the relief needed, it is expected to make a difference in many places.”
One of the main moisture sources for this rain is the remains of Cyclone “Sandra”, currently sitting over the north Tasman Sea. The remnants of “Sandra” will begin to interact with an evolving weather system in the Tasman Sea, before moving across the New Zealand during late Saturday and early Sunday.
The abundant moisture supply from this tropical system has the potential to bring downpours in places. MetService have issued a Severe Weather Warning for Westland and a Severe Weather Watch for Nelson and Buller.
On Monday, a cooler southerly flow sweeps across much of the country,bringing another period of rain. This could be heavy and persistent, especially along the east coast of New Zealand from about Wairarapa southwards.
