Morgellons: a Working Hypothesis
This brief article intends to serve as a basic introduction to Clifford Carnicom’s current paper which he began in January of this year; it remains in progress and approaches 100 pages. In this paper he covers three topics: the first (Phase One) is an explanation of the biochemical analyses he has performed on an oral filament which is characteristic of the Morgellons condition. The second (Phase Two) offers possible and/or probable health disruptions that are based upon these biochemical analyses; these disruptions are then compared to the observed and reported symptoms of the Morgellons condition. In the third part, now in progress, he is offering from a research perspective, mitigating strategies that may serve to balance health impacts given these disruptions.
Phase One: Through a recently acquired older infrared (IR) spectrophotometer, Carnicom has been able to make progress to uncover the molecular basis of the oral filament. This machine is able, through the use of infrared energy, to identify core organic structures of a biological filament sample. Within the infrared spectrum, the molecules vibrate in characteristic ways that biochemistry has labeled “functional groups.” A functional group is identified by its characteristic resonance when infrared energy is directed through it. He has been able, therefore, to identify many biochemical functional groups of the filament, such as amines (the basis for amino acids), carboxylic acids, phenols, aromatics, halogens, and others.
His findings using IR corroborates his prior work using chemical separation techniques, (e.g., chromatography), electrolysis, and visible light spectrometry in which he found the presence of iron and amino acids as core constituents of the biological filaments. It is important to understand that this filament growth logically uses these same substances for its own existence. The filament growth form is therefore expected to affect or interfere with iron and protein metabolic processes within the body. Iron is integral to the hemoglobin in the blood and its presence in the filament suggests the reduction of available oxygen to the body. As Carnicom explains, this is due to the condition of iron in the filament being in a highly oxidized state. In this state, the iron can no longer bind to the oxygen in hemoglobin. The significance of oxygen to all of the body’s systems cannot be overemphasized. Disruptions in the flow of oxygen can harm cells throughout the body, as, for example, has been demonstrated by Carnicom with the microscopic observation of red blood cells. Carnicom has also made special note of the role of histidine, an amino acid that appears to have been identified within the filament. Amino acids are the basis for proteins, the body’s builders. The research supports the very real possibility that the degradation of the red blood cells observed in more severe cases of Morgellons may be linked to the presence of both oxidized iron and histidine within the filament. Carnicom goes on further to state that “the existence of the iron problem alone, especially in combination with the bacterial or bacterial-like component that has also repeatedly been identified, goes a very long way in accounting for a large portion of the observed or reported health impacts from the Morgellons condition.” For detailed information about the significance of iron as an underlying factor of the Morgellon’s condition, please see Carnicom’s prior paper:
Likewise, the finding of amino acids, such as cysteine and histidine, in the filament has major implications for human health. From Carnicom’s abstract of the paper “Amino Acids Verified,” we read that “deficiencies or disturbances of these particular amino acids correlate highly with symptoms that appear to frequently exist with the condition, i.e., high oxidation levels and joint pains within the body.” Further conditions related to amino acid deficiency include: extended or chronic fatigue, gastro-intestinal imbalance, skin lesions, chronic decreased body temperature, and the diminished oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, among others.
Phase Two: In this phase, Carnicom examines the potential health impacts of the various functional groups which he has identified in the filament. He does this in the spirit of a researcher putting the pieces of a complex puzzle together. He invites us all to join him. He writes, “Infrared spectrometry alone cannot do this; additional resources, execution and smart thought will be required. The earlier this puzzle is solved in detail, the better we will all be for it. I can only ask you to join in the crusade.” He offers his own interpretations of the material, careful to stress that it is not medical advice, nor diagnosis, but offered here for research purposes only.
He begins by setting up side by side the health impacts associated with the Morgellons condition and the functional groups which he identified within the filament sample. In essence, Carnicom is traveling from both directions to find the meeting point in which an anticipated health effect from the presence of the functional group meets the actual health impact of the Morgellons condition. While he points out that there is not a one to one correspondence between the two (functional group/Morgellons symptom), “there are generalities to be made that may be very helpful in the interpretation of the plight that many find themselves within.”

Windows Inside CI
Gary began volunteering with CI in June of 2011, and has been a steady and valued presence as a staff Associate Member. Gary is a technical member of our research team, and has completed several valuable projects for us. “Projects that I have completed for the Carnicom Institute include the repair of a centrifuge instrument, the repair of a Van de Graaff generator and building a digitally controlled heating unit for laboratory glass vessels. Projects that are in the making right now include the design and assembly of a piece of equipment I’m calling a Reflective Particulate Detector. This is a major project of relative high complexity that if successful will detect the presence of any reflective particulate in the atmospheric air. I’m also working on a custom pen holder for Carnicom’s Perkin Elmer IR spectrophotometer. The end results will be easily obtainable pens at a reduced cost as compared to buying stock replacement pens. And the final project I’m working on is learning the ins and outs of a publicly available environmental reports web site – http://www.intellusnmdata.com/
There appears to be numerous reports indicating contaminants (Aluminum, Barium, and many others) in air and water samples. But I want to fully understand this web site before any final conclusions are made.”
Pete began with CI earlier this year, bringing his much needed expertise in Informational Technology to CI. Morgellons Research Project (MRP) & Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Planning and Progress
On May 18, 2013 a letter went out to all Morgellons Research Project (MRP) participants to inform them of the status of the research project in progress underway at Carnicom Institute. CI is in the process of establishing an Institutional Review Board (IRB) in order to ensure that our study will be conducted under the highest ethical standards as outlined by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
An IRB is an independent ethics review committee. The number one priority of an IRB is to protect human subjects from physical or psychological harm. The IRB has the responsibility to provide oversight, approve and monitor the planned research, and require modifications as needed.
This protocol is standard practice for research studies which involve human subjects and CI wants to be sure that we meet this standard. We undertake this protocol with the guidance of several doctors who have graciously stepped forward to assist us with this process. When the IRB process is complete, the research will resume and we will contact you at that time. There may be changes made in the project as a result of the IRB process.
We are pleased to announce that progress is being made and we are on track for completion of the IRB process by the latter part of fall. We recruit individuals, outside of Carnicom Institute’s administrative staff, to provide ethical oversight by joining the IRB. Prime candidates for this role are those with a strong ethical stance with respect to public safety. Environmental Filament Project
Carnicom Institute was fortunate to be able to obtain long awaited Scanning Electron Images (SEM) of the original environmental filaments which were submitted to the EPA and that were repudiated by that same agency. Comparison of the fiber images with scale bars, firmly places these fibers in the nanometer range and justifies the use of the term nano-technology, which has long been suspected, but impossible to confirm without a high resolution microscope such as the SEM. Visible clusters of these fibers are a rare occurrence. CI seeks to obtain more of these environmental filaments for further analysis in the coming months. This is how your donations help! A recently acquired digital microscope camera (CMOS) for our light microscope provides a clearer picture than we’ve ever had before. The color image below of an environmental filament sample is at a magnification of approximately 6,000x. At this magnification, it is possible to detect objects down to approximately 0.5 microns (500 nanometers).

In June Clifford hosted a webinar for staff members of the Institute to discuss aspects of his current research paper entitled, “Morgellons, A Working Hypothesis: Neural, Thyroid, Liver, Oxygen Protein and Iron Disruption.” A second webinar was held in July where he further explained the anticipated health effects which could occur as a result of the biochemical factors involved. Subsequent webinars will be held to cover ongoing work of this paper in progress. We will publish the webinars for the public as soon as they are available.

It is time to place our proverbial cards on the table, so to speak, and tell you about our needs simply to exist as an organization, much less to grow and accomplish what we see as our real task. As you may know, Clifford Carnicom was instrumental in initiating the work to identify the components of aerosols that are dispersed in our skies without our consent or knowledge. Since 1999, he has been a primary impetus behind the research, and often works alone. Almost five years ago he established Carnicom Institute to offer others the opportunity to join in the work. The Institute is entirely dependent upon public funding in order to develop and succeed, and our staff is all volunteer.
We have three basic needs in order to function successfully and to excel. The first is our basic operational expenses. In order to function as an organization, there are many operational supportive services and systems that we subscribe to, most of which cost money on a monthly basis. These services allow us to communicate and convene from across the country, to host the website, and to make our information available to you. We also rent office and lab space, a significant expense. This dedicated space is an absolute necessity for the work to continue. To cover this most basic level of need, we turn to you, our supporters to ask you to seriously consider contributing to the Institute on a monthly basis as a subscriber. As a subscriber your contribution of $10 per month (or more if you can afford it; please see the subscriber link on our home page for details), is a tremendous service. You provide funds that we can count on as we negotiate our monthly expenses. This small amount of money, barely enough for a sandwich and coffee, is a vital offering to this organization.
The second level of need concerns proper equipment to do our research. Clifford has “jury rigged” much of the equipment needed to date, and the details of how he has done so would make for an interesting article in itself. The Institute has been very fortunate to have acquired in 2012, thanks to our donors, a used infrared (IR) spectrophotometer, which has allowed us to extend our research much further. Though it is aged and requires special attention to function, Clifford has been able to accomplish much with it, as it is being used to reveal the molecular nature of the filaments he researchers. The health and environmental issues that we face are of such importance that they require and warrant the capabilities of a modern well-equipped laboratory. In particular, a modern IR spectrophotometer would be of untold benefit. We seek larger donations for these purposes and we hope to acquire grants, as well as willing donors who understand the urgent need for this research.
Finally, there is Clifford’s time. He is not independently wealthy, as some might imagine. He works for his livelihood and this means that the time available at the laboratory is very limited. Greater and more rapid progress can be made if Clifford is compensated at a modest level. This is the third level of our fundraising appeal. Clifford is one of the few engaged in such research; his work is original and it has been and remains freely available to the public. The Institute works to find answers for those suffering from the Morgellons condition, as well as for those eager to find out more about what is unleashed in the aerosols, how it is likely to affect us, and what we can do to help ourselves in the face of this reality.
