Dry spell taking toll in North Island

Radio NZ, 24th March, 2014

Federated Farmers says a long dry spell in parts of the upper North Island is starting to take its toll.

Areas in Northland, Auckland and Waikato have had no decent rain for about three months.

The west coast of Northland, south Auckland and northern and eastern Waikato are in the worst shape.

Waikato Federated Farmers president James Houghton says the situation is getting near to desperate for some.

No drought declaration has been made but Mr Houghton says the situation is being closely monitored week by week.

In Northland, Federated Farmers dairy section chair Ashley Cullen says some areas have recently had up to 40mm of rain but on the west side particularly around Dargaville it’s serious.

While farmers are becoming more used to long dry periods, Mr Cullen says it’s still very frustrating for them.
