Freak hailstorm on Wellington’s Haywards Hills,  ANDREA O’NEIL, 13 Nov 2014

A freak hailstorm dumped several inches of ice on top of Wellington’s Haywards Hill this afternoon.

Motorist Kate Mitchell said paddocks surrounding the rural road were white with what she thought was snow at around 4.15pm, and traffic was virtually at a standstill while hail rained down.

“It was like driving up Ruapehu. It was unbelievable,” Mitchell said.

“It was the most bizarre thing I’d ever seen.”

MetService severe weather forecaster Heath Gullery said it was not cold enough on the Haywards for snow, but there had been snow on the tops of the Tararuas. The thunderstorm had moved on to Paraparaumu, and Wellington could expect a bit more hail tonight and then clear weather, he said.

Here is a You Tube video from “TheCommanderNZ”, this is Methven, bout 25 North of Ashburton.

Interesting to see, another agricultural area hit. Only just last week, we were hearing bout the Nelson area being slammed.

Hi Clare, New Plymouth was deluged with a freakish hailstorm last Wednesday at the exact same time as this event … many roof gutters were so jam-packed with hail that the water had no where to go and overflowed into the ceiling area of many homes and businesses including my office ceiling which bulged under the water forcing us to pierce the ceiling and let the water out … The report on TVNZ showed ice on one side of the fenceline and none on the other side … like the hail stopped at the fenceline like co-ordinates were given to follow the fenceline only … this was pointed out by the weather lady … This is weather engineering for sure!!!
